PNP chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa on Friday expressed readiness to suffer the consequences of accepting free tickets to Senator Manny Pacquiao’s recent bout in Las Vegas as well as air fare accommodations for him and his family.
Dela Rosa and Pacquiao are now under investigation by the Ombudsman for possible violation of laws prohibiting government officials from receiving gifts of substantial value.
These laws include the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees and Presidential Decree No. 46.
Dela Rosa said Pacquiao gave him the gifts not because of his position as chief of the PNP but because they were longtime
“Basta ako, ang importante, sa aking pananaw, yung imbitasyon ni Senador Pacquiao na tinanggap ko naman, ay hindi po yun in consideration of my position (as the) chief of PNP,” Dela Rosa explained.
At pareho ang aming hilig, boxing kasi pareho po kaming laki sa hirap at nakikita naming boxing ang pwedeng aangat sa buhay namin,” he continued, joking he would have been a retired boxer if he did not become a cop.
Dela Rosa added that this was not the first he accepted such gifts.
“Aminin ko, that was not the first time at saka hindi lang naman ako ang na-libre, marami po kami,” Dela Rosa said.
Dela Rosa said Pacquiao’s offer was not a bribe. He said Pacquiao was also not a criminal.
The police chief previously stated that there was nothing wrong with the gift as Pacquiao did not use public funds in paying for the air fare and hotel expenses of Dela Rosa and his family.
